CRESTA brings together four of Europe’s leading supercomputing centres, with one of the world’s major equipment vendors, two of Europe’s leading programming tools providers and six application and problem owners to explore how the exaflop challenge can be met.

 

Åbo Akademi University is one of ten universities in Finland offering higher education in humanities, biosciences, chemical engineering and information technologies. The Department of Information Technologies is part of the Division of Natural Sciences and Technology at Åbo Akademi offering both undergraduate and graduate teaching and research in computer science, software engineering, embedded systems, information systems and high performance computing (HPC).

Allinea Software is the leading developer of software development tools for high performance computing.  Headquartered in Warwick, UK, with subsidiaries in Germany and the US, the company's flagship product, Allinea DDT is widely used for debugging parallel software in research and industry worldwide.  Allinea DDT is the record holder for scalable debugging - able to debug code running at the full size of the largest Petascale class systems available with performance measured in milliseconds.

Cray’s mission is to be the premier provider of supercomputing solutions for its customers' most challenging scientific and engineering problems. Cray systems are used to design safer vehicles, create new materials, discover life-saving drugs, predict severe weather and climate change, analyze complex data structures, safeguard national security and a host of other applications that benefit humanity by advancing the frontiers of science and engineering. Cray is headquartered in the USA and has Research and Development staff in various locations including the UK, Switzerland and Germany.

DLR is Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, transportation and energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany's Space Agency, the German federal government has given DLR responsibility for the forward planning and implementation of the German space programme as well as international representation of Germany's interests. Approximately 6900 people work for DLR; the center has 32 institutes and facilities at 15 locations in Germany. DLR also has offices in Brussels, Paris and Washington, D.C.

Ecole Centrale Paris (ECP) was founded in 1829. It was the first major engineering school to train engineers in the early days of industry. Today the primary vocation of ECP is still to train managers for industry, a role which gives it a unique position among the major French engineering schools.

The University of Edinburgh is one of Europe’s leading research universities. It is the Project Coordinator of the CRESTA proposal and is represented in this project by its supercomputing centre, EPCC. Established in 1990, the organisation is one of Europe’s leading supercomputing centres with a full-time staff of 75, most educated to postgraduate level, and with a large array of HPC systems including ARCHER, the 3008-node Cray XC30-based UK National HPC service.

KTH, established in 1827, is one of Europe's top schools for science and engineering, graduating one-third of Sweden's undergraduate and graduate engineers in the full range of engineering disciplines. Enrolment is about 17,500 students, of which about 1,400 are pursuing PhD studies. In this proposal KTH is represented by PDC, TCB, the division of Theoretical & Computational Biophysics, and the Linné FLOW Centre.

The Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) is a central scientific unit of the Technische Universität Dresden in Germany with a broad spectrum of services and research activities. With its interdisciplinary orientation, ZIH supports other departments and institutions in their research and education for all matters related to information technology and computer science.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF, the Centre) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 34 States.

The Department of Physics at the University of Jyvaskyla has 16 full professors and well above a 100 other members of staff. There are c. 500 undergraduate students and c. 80 graduate students in the Department, and it is currently one of the 10 Centres of Excellence in Student Training nominated by the Ministry of Education in Finnish universities.

Founded in 1829, the foremost aim of the University of Stuttgart (USTUTT) in research and teaching lies in the fields of engineering and the natural sciences. The university with its 140 institutes distributed over 10 faculties, 5,000 employees, and about 16,000 students has a strong impact in Baden-Württemberg, Germany’s traditional high-tech region.

CSC’s IT Center for Science Ltd is a non-profit company administered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. CSC provides IT support and resources for academia, research institutes and companies. CSC provides Finland's widest selection of scientific software and databases and Finland's most powerful supercomputing environment that researchers can use via the Funet network.

UCL was founded in 1826 as a radically different university, opening up English higher education for the first time to people of all beliefs and social backgrounds. UCL is among the world's top universities, as reflected in performance in a range of rankings and tables. 21 Nobel prizewinners have come from the UCL community.

The Centre for Computational Science is concerned with many aspects of theoretical and computational science, from chemistry and physics to materials, life and biomedical sciences as well as informatics. We explore these domains through high performance, data intensive, supercomputing and distributed (grid/cloud) computing.

Our different computational techniques span time and length-scales from the macro-, through the meso- and to the nano- and microscales. We are committed to studying new approaches and techniques that bridge these scales.
