Åbo Akademi University is one of ten universities in Finland offering higher education in humanities, biosciences, chemical engineering and information technologies. The Department of Information Technologies is part of the Division of Natural Sciences and Technology at Åbo Akademi offering both undergraduate and graduate teaching and research in computer science, software engineering, embedded systems, information systems and high performance computing (HPC).
Presently the department has 10 professors, 240 undergraduates and 45 graduate students. The HPC group specializes in parallel programming, algorithmic and code optimisation, computer graphics and the programming of general purpose graphics processing units GPGPUs. In CRESTA the HPC group from ABO joins WP6 to collaborate with EPCC, KTH, CSC and other partners in redesigning and rewriting the nuclear plasma fusion simulation code ELMFIRE, enabling it to run on tens of thousands of processors and partly on GPGPUs. We expect to collaborate closely not only with other application developers within CRESTA but also with systems development for exascale applications.
